6 MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS FOR HEALTH AND HEALING

Mushrooms are renowned for their healing and immune-boosting properties. In fact, the use of medicinal mushrooms may date back to the Neolithic period—about 15,000 years ago!

Mushrooms are part of the fungi kingdom, which is off-putting to some. But their complexity and richness makes them a much sought-after culinary ingredient. There are many types of mushrooms used in cuisines throughout the world; however, it’s actually their health benefits that provide the greatest incentive for making them a prominent part of your wellness plan.

MEDICINAL MUSHROOM BENEFITS

Mushrooms are low in calories and glucose and high in a variety of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Most notably, mushrooms are said to contain anti-tumor, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties, while providing powerful immunological benefits that protect against illnesses and diseases like cancer.

Mushrooms also benefit skin health. Mushrooms decrease inflammation and free radical damage, making a direct impact on your complexion. They can also help reduce redness, acne, and wrinkles, and may reverse signs of aging.

Though there are many mushrooms that support wellness and beauty, each variety contains its own nutritional profile. We’ve chosen six mushrooms that stand out for their medicinal benefits.

6 MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS FOR HEALTH AND HEALING

WHAT IS IT
SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS originated in Eastern Asia and are among the most popular mushroom varieties.

WHAT IT DOES
Shiitake mushrooms are a rich source of B vitamins, copper, and selenium. They also contain lentinan, a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This compound is even used in cancer treatments.

HOW TO USE IT
To eat, remove the tough stems, which can be saved to add nutrition and depth of flavor to vegetable stock. Chop the tops, then sauté with olive or coconut oil, garlic, and salt. Enjoy as a side or combine with stir-fries for a complete meal.

WHAT IS IT
REISHI MUSHROOMS are adaptogens that help the body positively adapt to stress.

WHAT IT DOES
Reishis are herbal mushrooms known to lessen anxiety and improve mood and energy levels. They also support liver detoxification and hormone balance.

HOW TO USE IT
You can simmer dried reishi mushrooms with water to prepare stocks and teas. You can also purchase reishi supplements or tinctures.

WHAT IS IT
LION’S MANE are round, white, stemless mushrooms that, as the name suggests, resemble a mane.

WHAT IT DOES
Lion’s mane is known for its neuroregenerative benefits, which can boost brain function and protect against or slow the progression of diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia.

HOW TO USE IT
Slice lion’s mane and cook until golden brown on each side. Prepare a light garlic and oil sauce, and spoon over the top. Enjoy with brown rice or pasta.

WHAT IS IT
MAITAKE MUSHROOMS grow in the wild and are found at the base of trees. However, it’s best to purchase them at the grocery store or farmer’s market, as opposed to picking them yourself.

WHAT IT DOES
Maitake mushrooms stimulate and enhance immune function. They may also lower blood pressure and blood sugar.

HOW TO USE IT
Chop or pull apart the stems. Sauté with garlic, shallots, and olive oil, or sear until golden. You can also search for vegan maitake risotto recipes for an elegant meal.

WHAT IS IT
CORDYCEPS are indigenous to China and are referenced in Chinese and Tibetan medicine.

WHAT IT DOES
Cordyceps are known to improve energy and endurance and combat symptoms of fatigue. They also help protect the body against the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

HOW TO USE IT
It may be hard to find fresh or dried cordyceps, so look for tinctures and supplements. If you have trouble finding these products in a natural health store, you can order them online.

WHAT IS IT
TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOMS grow on dead or decaying trees and logs, and can be identified by their colorful and feather-like appearance. To consume them safely, skip the foraging excursion and search for them online.

WHAT IT DOES
Following a study on women and breast cancer, it was discovered that turkey tail mushrooms can help build up the immune system after cancer treatments. They can also be taken to protect the body against colds, flus, infections, and diseases.

HOW TO USE IT
Buy dried turkey tail to make broths and teas, or look for tinctures and supplements.

If you’re new to medicinal mushrooms, prepare a few meals using fresh or dried mushrooms and see if you notice any positive changes. If you feel a cold coming on or are suffering from fatigue, try teas or tinctures for maximum mushroom benefits.

It’s important to note that mushrooms that grow in the wild can be poisonous, so mushrooms should always be purchased from a grocer or farmer, or identified by a reliable purveyor.

As with all dietary and supplement changes, it’s best to consult with your healthcare practitioner. This article is not intended to treat, diagnose, or replace the advice of a medical professional.
